Historic Colonial – Exterior

Historic Colonial - Exterior Project

Set along one of Newport’s charming streets, this historic colonial underwent a striking transformation, evolving from a traditional cream exterior into a rich, low-luster black finish that feels both modern and timeless.

The goal was not to erase the home’s history, but to reinterpret it with confidence. At the core of this transformation was a commitment by Smyth Painting Company to preserve the quintessential New England charm that defines homes like this, while delivering exceptional applications and a refined, elevated finish. Every decision was made with intention, ensuring the final result remained true to an authentic colonial aesthetic, rather than feeling overly modern or out of place.

Before

The existing cream siding, while classic, softened the home’s presence blending into its surroundings rather than standing apart.

After

The shift to a low-luster black completely redefines the home:

  • Architectural Contrast: Window trim, railings, and structural lines now stand out with crisp clarity
  • Material Emphasis: The combination of painted siding and natural cedar shingles creates depth and visual interest
  • Historic Meets Modern: The finish respects the home’s colonial roots while introducing a bold, contemporary edge

The result is a home that feels grounded, elevated, and unmistakably intentional
